Lp(a)

What is Lp(a)?

Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is a type of LDL cholesterol with an added protein, apolipoprotein(a). It's a significant, genetically determined risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks and strokes. High Lp(a) levels are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and other vascular conditions. Unlike other lipid levels, Lp(a) levels are largely unaffected by lifestyle changes and are consistent throughout life, making it a challenging risk factor to modify.
